Our pro bono team of international lawyers and researchers is here to help

WHAT DO WE DO ?

At ILAAD, our lawyers and researchers provide free legal and advocacy support at the international level on behalf of victims of arbitrary detention to campaign globally for freedom and defend arbitrary detention cases before the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD).

WORKING GROUP ON ARBITRARY DETENTION

The WGAD has the mandate to investigate cases of deprivation of liberty imposed arbitrarily or inconsistently with the international standards. Under its regular communications procedure, the Working Group can consider individual complaints, leading to the adoption of opinions as to the arbitrariness of the detention.

REPORT A DETENTION

Use our Arbitrary Detention Form to verify the arbitrary character of a detention and report it to our team.

Based on the Model Questionnaire of the United Nations WGAD, the form will ask a series of questions to process information about the reported detention and generate a report with a preliminary assessment on whether the documented situation may qualify as one of the five categories of arbitrary detention recognized by the  Working Group.

Our team of pro bono lawyers and researchers will review the report before contacting you to discuss the opportunity to submit a complaint to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

If taking a case to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention aligns with the detainee’s defense strategy, our international human rights litigation team can provide free legal assistance for all the procedures before the United Nations on behalf of the detainee, in order to obtain a report from the Working Group calling for an immediate release.
